As of recent days, the radioactivity in Chernobyl and Pripyat has reached a record low and the Ukraine is now allowing tourists into the area. There are many tour companies that you can contact for a great adventure into the "exclusion zone." Tours go in and around Pripyat, however, you can spend no longer then 24 hours at a time in the city. The reactor control room and plant in general are usually off limits to the public, but on some occacions members of the media and/or photographers may be permitted entry for a very short amount of time.
Radiation | Penetration |

This image is the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, it's covered by a steel 'sarcophagus' to sheild the outside world from the radiation trapped within the building.
